ATTORNEY
Please note: A portion of this position (approximately .50 FTE) is funded by federal stimulus funding. This funding is expected to last through Summer 2011.
Responsibilities: Attorney is needed to provide civil legal services to victims of domestic violence and low income people at risk of homelessness in Amsterdam Legal Aid office. The attorney will be responsible for providing advice, brief service, community legal education and representation of victims of domestic violence in a broad range of civil matters including orders of protection, custody, and child support. Also responsible for providing general legal services to low income residents of Fulton, Montgomery and Schoharie Counties including providing legal services to low income people at risk of homelessness. Responsible for implementation, recordkeeping and reporting for Division of Criminal Justice Services grant. Attorney will be expected to work closely with local domestic violence service providers and domestic violence task forces.
Qualifications: At least 2 to 6 years prior legal experience or equivalent is required. Admitted to New York State Bar. Demonstrated commitment to public interest law and providing high quality legal services to clients in civil matters. Must be able to communicate effectively and work independently and efficiently. Must have a car and valid New York driver's license. Good computer skills. Prior experience in representation of victims of domestic violence in Family Court or relevant housing experience. Ability to speak Spanish a plus.
Program Profile: The Legal Aid Society is a publicly funded law firm which provides free civil legal services to low-income individuals. This position is in our four-person branch office in Amsterdam. The Amsterdam office serves low income individuals in Fulton, Montgomery and Schoharie Counties.
Salary: $42,072 to $50,087. Unionized program, with excellent fringe benefits. May be eligible for Loan Repayment Assistance Program.
